Sore muscles can occur from a variety of factors, including misalignment, overuse or underuse. Discomfort in the body is one of the top reasons people see doctors.

Back pain, in particular, accounts for 80% of disability cases in the United States. However, there are a few things you can do to help get your sore muscles under control.

Inversion Therapy

Although it may seem crazy, being flipped upside down actually has its benefits. While you may picture yourself hanging by the feet like a bat, inversion therapy is actually a little bit different. Doctors and specialists use a table made specifically for this purpose. You are then turned upside down to help take pressure off of the nerves and discs in the spine and also helps create space between the vertebrae. Despite its absurd sounding nature, many studies have confirmed it to be beneficial.

Ice and Heat

Most doctors and specialists will tell you to put ice or heat on a sore muscle or joint. This is because it can help reduce soreness and inflammation. Apply ice wrapped in a towel or paper towel for 20 to 30 minutes at a time so it doesn’t irritate the already sore area. Continue this for the first 72 hours of your injury, then follow up with heat.

Going to a Chiropractor

Nothing is more satisfying than hearing that click when the chiropractor adjusts your spine or neck. But not only is the sound wonderful, but it also has been proven to help relieve sore muscles, joints and ligaments. When seeing a chiropractor, he or she will adjust joints in your body, mainly focusing on your spine. This is to alleviate the pain and discomfort you may be feeling.

Yoga

This ancient Indian practice, which involves a series of poses, has been proven effective to help with back pain and discomfort. Stretching can help alleviate muscle and joint pain, and stretching is a core component of yoga itself.

Topical Creams

Topical creams, typically those which produce a heating effect, often help reduce the pain and swelling associated with muscle aches or other injuries. When looking for a topical cream, however, it is important that you find one devoid of toxic substances and artificial additions.
