The Emergency Film Group wants you to be ready for the possibility for IEDs in your neighborhood. In order to get up to speed on this supposed threat, the company is offering a DVD on the subject to “help organizations meet Department of Homeland Security grant requirements, which emphasize programs that encourage public and private IED awareness.” The video is a steal at a mere $450 in either DVD or VHS format.

Sarcasm aside, this is merely another example of rank and shameless profiteering in the manufactured GWOT, now said to be right around the corner and coming to your neighborhood soon. On its product web page, EFG takes it for granted shadowy and ill-defined terrorists will strike the heartland:

Recent history has shown that IEDs (improvised explosive devices) and VBIEDs (vehicle-borne improvised explosive devices) are often the terrorists’ weapon of choice. It is likely that these attacks would be carried out in non- battlefield environments. The first responder community will be a community’s first line of defense if these deadly weapons are involved in an incident. This new program, IEDs & VBIEDs, will raise the awareness of emergency personnel regarding these weapons.

Designed for police officers, firefighters, hazmat teams, bomb squads, EMTs, emergency management, military personnel, security guards and others who may encounter or respond to incidents involving IEDs.

Lest you think this is a joke, consider Michael Chertoff, Ministry of Homeland Security head honcho. “Our Department is 100 percent committed to protecting the people of the United States from IEDs,” said Chertoff almost exactly a year ago. “Within the Department, we established an Office for Bombing Prevention specifically to work with other federal, state, and local agencies, as well as members of the private sector, to implement a national strategy to address IED threats.”

As well, Bush signed yet another of his infamous presidential directives in order to address the phantom threat of terrorist IEDs, this time Homeland Security Presidential Directive-19 (HSPD-19). “This strategy will deter, prevent and detect terrorist use of explosives before the threats become imminent. It also tasks the Department of Justice to develop a national strategy for IED incidents and produce an IED annex to the National Response Framework,” writes Julie Curry, a Texas A&M University researcher.

All of this is nothing if not a scam designed to federalize government agencies right down to the state, county, and local level and get your firefighter and cop on the federal teat through grants, propaganda, training programs and other such “assistance.” It’s also a way to continue the fear, as IEDs are pretty darn scary.

Of course, there is virtually no chance of genuine “terrorists” planting IEDs on roadsides and under viaducts in your town, that is unless said terrorists are working for the CIA. Keep in mind that IEDs were invented by the Iraqi resistance and used against an occupying foreign military. As brutal as IEDs are, they are weapons of resistance, not terrorist weapons used against civilians.
