William Hoover has stepped down from his deputy position with Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Fallout from the ATF’s “Fast and Furious” gun walking program is most likely the blame.

While Hoover has received his share of blame for the botched operation, he is one of the few involved that attempted to clean up the mess. When he was briefed on just how many guns were being “walked” across the U.S./Mexico border, he ordered that the program be stopped and wrapped up in 90 days. Despite his efforts, a federal grand jury felt his actions were too little too late.

Under his watch an ATF agent was shot and killed with one of the guns allowed to cross the border.
