The family of a Marshall man who died in police custody has filed a lawsuit against the city of Marshall, its former police chief and several police officers.

The plaintiffs in the lawsuit filed Dec. 12 in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas are listed as Marcus Dewayne Slade’s family members, including his father, C.S. Slade; his mother, Dorothy Slade; his siblings. Tanisha Slade and Coren Slade-Bell; as well as his son’s mother, Kim Spearman.

The family is suing for wrongful death damages and survival damages against the city, former police Chief Stan Spence and officers John Johnston, Cortney Wells and Stacey Roach. It also is suing Taser international — the company that manufactures the Taser X26 model used against Slade on Jan. 4 — for negligence.
