A major 7.3 magnitude earthquake has struck off the coast of northern Japan, near the Fukushima reactor that has remained damaged since the devastating 2011 earthquake and tsunami in the same region.

The Japanese Meteorological Agency has issued a tsunami warning for the island’s northern Pacific coast, with waves potentially reaching 10 feet.

The agency reports that the epicenter of the earthquake, which struck at approximately 6 a.m. local time, was located in the Pacific ocean at a depth of six miles. It was felt as far away as Tokyo.

The size of today’s earthquake is considerably more powerful than the 2011 quake, which registered 6.6 magnitude.
