Here’s a quick round-up of just some of the cities and counties across the United States who have announced DUI checkpoints on this holiday. Whatever happened to the 4th & 5th Amendements? In some cases, the local police will not even disclose where the location of the checkpoint will be.
While these checkpoints have clearly popped up all across the nation, they seem particularly prevalent in California. That is probably because state legislators have now declared the upcoming 2010 to be ‘The Year of the Checkpoint’ (see below) so clearly enforcement will be ramped up despite the blatant legal problems it poses. Last year in California, it was the Army helping with the checkpoint at 29 Palms, in clear violation of Posse Comitatus. Wisconsin is notably one of 12 states not to legalize roadblock checkpoints.

Last week state traffic safety officials announced plans to tighten their grip on drunk drivers and declared 2010 “The Year of the Checkpoint.”
Plans are to send a record $8 million in grant funding to 148 law enforcement agencies for DUI checkpoints – up from $5 million in 2009.
The California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) will fund more than 2,500 sobriety checkpoints in 2010, a 47 percent increase over the 1,700 conducted this year.

Tracy police will be conducting a sobriety checkpoint this weekend.
The checkpoint will run from 6 p.m. Sunday to 2 a.m. Monday at an unspecified location in the city, said Sgt. Tony Sheneman. Funding from the checkpoint comes from the state Office of Traffic Safety.
Police will run the checkpoint from 8:30 p.m. until about 1 a.m. Monday at an undisclosed location in the city.

MARTINEZ — As part of a statewide holiday crackdown on drunken driving, Martinez police will conduct a DUI checkpoint on city streets in the run-up to New Year’s weekend.
The checkpoint is scheduled to last from 6 p.m. Wednesday until midnight Thursday, or New Year’s Eve, in the 3700 block of Alhambra Avenue thru Jan. 3.

As we approach the Christmas and New Year’s holidays, Big Island police are informing motorists that police will be conducting DUI checkpoints throughout the island during the holiday season. The effort is part of a national and statewide campaign called “Drunk Driving: Over the Limit. Under Arrest.”
Sergeant Kelly Ka’aumoana-Matsumoto, head of the Traffic Services Section, said police are reminding motorist of the consequences of impaired driving.

Monrovia Police Department will conduct a DUI/drivers license checkpoint from 7 p.m. tonight to 2 a.m. Saturday at Myrtle and Montana, in an effort to reduce the number of persons killed and injured in alcohol involved crashes, officials announced Thursday.
DUI checkpoints are conducted to identify offenders and get them off the street, as well as educate the public on the dangers of impaired driving, the department said in a statement.

Hingham police considered Friday night into the early hours of Saturday morning, a good night – not because they made drunk driving arrests but because there were fewer arrests than expected.

GLENDALE — Drivers who take to the road after sipping a couple of alcoholic drinks at a holiday party stand a greater chance of landing in jail this weekend.
Glendale police are planning to crack down on drunk drivers at checkpoints Saturday and Jan. 2 as part of the Avoid the 100 campaign, an aggressive, two-week period in Los Angeles County aimed at stopping motorists from driving under the influence.
Saturday’s checkpoint will be heavily staffed with officers, including Burbank police, and community service officers, who will handle vehicle impounding, Glendale Police Sgt. Dennis Smith said.

NORMAN, OKLAHOMA — Norman Police arrested four people over the weekend as a part of their crack down on drinking and driving over the holiday season.
The sobriety checkpoints are set up to reduce the risk of fatal accidents that result in drunken driving, Lt. Tony Riddles, Norman Police spokesman stated in a press release.
“The Norman Police Department would once again like to remind everyone that driving drunk is not worth the deadly risks and costly consequences,” Riddles stated. “Not only do you risk killing yourself or someone else, but the trauma and financial costs of a crash or an arrest for DUI can be significant.”
