Democratic Governor Terry McAuliffe repeated a promise Sunday that he would physically assault the President if he got too close to him.

While discussing a potential White House run in 2020, The Virgina governor last week said that Trump would have to “be picked up off the floor,” if he attempted bullying tactics during any debate.

McAuliffe told Chris Matthews that it would “be the last time Donald Trump ever did that,” adding “listen, this guy got in my space, you want to get in my space, I’ve always said, Chris, you punch back twice as hard, and it wouldn’t be hard to do it.”

“Hit him back as hard as you possibly can.” the governor continued.

In an interview with CNN’s Jake Tapper Sunday, McAuliffe was asked what he meant by the remarks.

“So that does sound that you’re saying that if he came too close to you, you would use physical violence?” Tapper asked after playing the MSNBC clip.

“I answered the question like I think most folks would actually answer the question,” McAuliffe said.

“I didn’t say punch,” the Virgina governor claimed, even though he did say the word ‘punch’.

“People need to stand up and punch him back, punch him back rhetorically,” McAuliffe added, saying “enough is enough.”

Nevertheless, McAuliffe still did not disavow the idea that he would physically assault Trump, given the chance.

“Maybe if I had to push him back gently and he fell down on his own right, but the point of this is, I’m sick and tired of Donald Trump attacking everybody.” McAuliffe said.

When asked if he is going to run in 2020, McAuliffe said “We’ll see what happens… But could you imagine, hypothetically, if that ever happened? You’d have to sell tickets to that debate.”

He claimed he was focused on redistricting in 2018, prompting Tapper to quip “you’re focused on that, but you’re thinking about a debate with President Trump.”

“I think everybody sits around, dreams about a debate [with] President Trump and how much fun that could actually be,” McAuliffe responded.
