A veteran D.C. police officer charged with prostituting two teenage girls had been investigated for drug use and running a prostitution ring out of his Southeast apartment as early as 2011, a D.C. police internal affairs officer said Wednesday.

New details about officer Linwood Barnhill Jr.’s case and history with the force emerged during his preliminary hearing in D.C. Superior Court. Barnhill, 47, dressed in an orange D.C. jail jumpsuit with his wrists and ankles shackled, often smiled, shook his head and took notes as two of his colleagues on the police force testified against him.

One officer, Jeffrey Williams of M.P.D.’s internal affairs division, testified his office first investigated Barnhill for operating a prostitution ring out of his apartment in 2011 after they received an anonymous phone call. The caller also told officers Barnhill was smoking marijuana. Barnhill was arrested last week. He has been charged with two counts of pandering a minor for the purpose of prostitution.
