Congressman Ron Paul says he is seriously considering a 2012 Senate run after he was voted Texans’ second most popular choice to replace an outgoing Senator in a recent survey.

“It’s certainly crossed my mind,” Paul told The Hill recently.

The poll (PDF), released Wednesday, was conducted by the Democratic-affiliated Public Policy Polling. It indicated that the Congressman was one of the top candidates among potential voters to fill the soon to be vacated seat of Republican Kay Bailey Hutchison, who announced her retirement last week.

Paul was placed just three points behind state Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst, with a share of 20% of the vote.

Noting that his supporters alerted him to the development, the Congressman said he was surprised and interested by the results, and that he has considered an attempted move to the Senate previously.

Though he has yet to make any decisions, Paul has repeatedly told the media that he is also considering another presidential run in 2012.

Earlier this month, Paul described the chances of another campaign as 50/50, telling CNN’s Anderson Cooper “Because the young people are responding and giving the encouragement, I am really thinking very seriously about it.”

Whichever route Paul opts to take, whether to mount a run on the Senate, the presidency or simply to continue his efforts in Congress to push for a full audit of the Federal Reserve, there is no doubt that he continue to pursue the myriad of issues that have propelled him to the position of one of the country’s few respected politicians when it comes to the protection of constitutional values and individual liberty.

Yesterday the Congressman gave another rousing speech on the House floor, laying out the changes the US must make if the country is ever again to be considered the standard for a free society.
