CNN will provide one hour of airtime to the President on Thursday which will be used to present a ‘Town Hall’ style pitch on gun control.

The announcement was made Sunday, with CNN stating that Obama will attempt “to make gun control part of his legacy.”

Anderson Cooper will host the 8pm special, which detractors will label a propaganda effort, in the wake of reports that Obama is set to announce executive action on gun control legislation within a week.

CNN notes that the event, whether purposefully or not, coincides with the fifth anniversary of the shooting of former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, in an incident in Arizona that killed six others.

The Town Hall event will simply be titled “Guns in America.”

CNN makes it clear that it is providing airtime for Obama to make one “final pitch” on the issue.

Previous CNN events of this nature have been firmly partisan affairs. A recent CNN ‘town hall’ with Hillary Clinton featured an audience full of her supporters throwing softballs clearly designed to bolster her policies.

In his latest weekly address, Obama attempted to make the issue about defending children from gun-rights groups.

“The gun lobby is loud and well organized in its defense of effortlessly available guns for anyone. The rest of us are going to have to be just as passionate and well organized in our defense of our kids.” the President said, stating “Change, as always, is going to take all of us.”

Obama is expected to announce a new executive action to bypass Congress and expand background checks on gun sales.
