Soon after the attack in Texas on the “Muhammad Art Exhibit and Cartoon Contest” at the Culwell Event Center in North Garland, CNN tweeted that the alleged perpetrators were armed with automatic weapons.

A search of news stories does not confirm that police made the claim. The CNN tweet points to an article on the CNN website that does not mention automatic weapons.

The phrase, however, does appear in a Reuters news report. “In Sunday’s incident, the two suspects drove up to the building in a car as the event was coming to an end, and opened fire with automatic rifles at an unarmed security officer, striking him in the leg, police and city officials said.”

It is unclear if police told Reuters the suspects used automatic weapons or this was an assumption on the part of Reuters. The article does not contain a direct quote from police.

News reports often incorrectly identify military-styled semi-automatic firearms as automatic weapons.

One blogger cited an RT article he said contained a reference to the suspects having automatic weapons and a grenade launcher. “At least one of the suspects allegedly had a hand grenade,” the first paragraph of the RT states, according to the website. The reference is not contained in the RT article. The article was probably changed because the claim was inaccurate.

The CNN tweet is based on fallacious information and represents yet another knee-jerk attack on the Second Amendment. The sort of weapons allegedly used by the suspects, who were killed by police, is irrelevant unless you are promoting an anti-Second Amendment agenda.

CNN Consistently Attacks Second Amendment

CNN coverage of the Second Amendment has been consistently biased and it should come as no surprise it is using the incident in Texas to further the anti-firearms agenda.

Former CNN host Piers Morgan was a strident anti-Second Amendment advocate. In January, 2013 Alex Jones went on Morgan’s show to denounce the liberal agenda on firearms.

“Let me say, 1776 will commence again if you try to take our firearms. No matter how many lemmings you get out there on the street begging for them to be taken. We will not relinquish them,” Jones said.

Last February it was announced Morgan’s television show would be cancelled. His haughty British superiority and his stance on firearms contributed to the demise of his show, according to critics.

“Mr. Morgan’s approach to gun regulation was more akin to King George III, peering down his nose at the unruly colonies and wondering how to bring the savages to heel,” David Carr wrote for The New York Times after the cancellation was announced.
