A former CIA employee from Royal Oak was sentenced to two months in prison and six months of home confinement Monday for submitting fabricated background investigation reports on job applicants.

U.S. District Judge Avern Cohn also ordered Kerry Gerdes, 27, to pay $24,555 restitution for the salary she was paid to perform the work.

Gerdes pleaded guilty last August to filing 80 such reports from December 2006 through May 2007. She was caught through a random quality control check. Authorities said no one got hired who should not have been put on the payroll.

Her lawyer, Deputy Federal Defender Richard Helfrick, urged Cohn to give her probation, saying it was her first job out of college and that she had become overwhelmed by her workload while living in a new area — suburban Washington, D.C., away from her family.
