Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi said on Thursday that the US had to fully recognize the great sensitivity and gravity, which came with military assistance to Taiwan — a self-ruled island which China considers a part of its own territory, Xinhua reported.
He made the remarks on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly’s 66th annual session in New York.
The improvement of the fighter planes is part of a new USD-5.85-billion arms package Washington announced on Wednesday it would provide for Taiwan.
Yang said respecting each other’s core interests was the principle underpinning China’s cooperation with the US. “We should cherish our cooperation, as it embodies the important common interests of our two countries.”
He also urged that the White House stop selling weaponry to Taiwan and cut its military ties with the island.
