More than 100 people were killed in a series of car bombings and drive-by shootings yesterday in the worst day of violence Iraq has suffered this year.
The bloodiest incident took place in the town of Hilla, 100 miles south of Baghdad, where 45 people died when two car bombs exploded at a textile factory as workers ended their shift. There were reports of a third explosion as rescuers tried to help victims.
Another suicide bomber killed more than a dozen people in a market in a town south-east of Baghdad, while earlier in the day gunmen using silencers attacked checkpoints in the capital, killing Iraqi soldiers and police.
Scores have died since Iraq’s hotly contested parliamentary election on March 7. No party gained a majority, setting off weeks of hard bargaining to create a coalition government.
