Questionable photos of Russians in eastern Ukraine permeate corporate media

Vice President Joe Biden met with junta leaders Arseniy Yatsenyuk and Oleksandr Turchynov in Kyiv and said the United States will pledge an additional $50 million as part of a package of assistance to help Ukraine pursue political and economic reform and strengthen its partnership with the United States, according to CNN.
“You will not walk this road alone. We will walk it with you,” Biden told Yatsenyuk, a former central banker who runs a foundation supported by the U.S. State Department, the National Endowment for Democracy, NATO, Chatham House, Horizon Capital, Swedbank, and the German Marshall Fund.
Biden also said the IMF will soon kick in billions to prop up the regime as it ineptly tries to govern a country riven by social and political chaos following a February coup d’état and the ouster of Ukraine’s democratically elected president, Viktor Yanukovych.
$11.4 million of the $50 million will flow into the coffers of the country’s inapt military. During an “anti-terror” operation last week in eastern Ukraine, the elite Dnipropetrovsk paratrooper brigade surrendered to unarmed pro-Russian activists and turned over their weapons, including armored vehicles, thus revealing problems the junta faces in attempting to pacify parts of the country opposed to the coup and it interim leadership that includes ultra-nationalists and fascists.
State Department Produces Photos, Claims Russia Operating in Eastern Ukraine
Biden’s visit coincides with a new propaganda campaign by the State Department. Images provided by the coup regime and posted by The New York Times purportedly show Russian “sabotage-reconnaissance groups” acting in Ukrainian towns. The photos, accepted as legitimate by the Obama administration, were vetted by Ukraine’s state security service, an organization run by the neo-Nazi Andriy Parubiy and his deputy, Right Sector fascist Dmitry Yarosh.
Members of the Verkhovna Rada, the Ukrainian Parliament, believe the Ukrainian Security Service has become a de facto unit of the CIA following a secret meeting between CIA director John Brennan and junta officials last week. The CIA has specialized in propaganda since the 1950s when former Wall Street lawyer Frank Wisner headed up the CIA’s Directorate of Plans. Wisner, writes Carl Bernstein, “was the Agency’s premier orchestrator of ‘black’ operations, including many in which journalists were involved,” and he “liked to boast of his ‘mighty Wurlitzer,’ a wondrous propaganda instrument he built, and played, with help from the press.”
The Assoicated Press reports there was no way to immediately verify the photographs, which it says were either taken from the internet or handed over to the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe last week by coup diplomats.
“The US started with a photo of a guy with a long beard in Slovyansk, and a picture of a Russian soldier in Georgia in 2008 with an even longer beard. Coincidence? The US can’t imagine it,” writes Jason Ditz for Antiwar.com, and adds the disputable photos are “the closest thing to a smoking gun the US appears to have been able to find.”
The photos, admitted by the BBC to be sketchy at best, are, however, merely supplemental. The United States, the European Union and NATO have argued for weeks events in Crimea and eastern Ukraine are orchestrated by Russia.
“President Barack Obama, Chancellor Angela Merkel, Prime Minister David Cameron, President François Hollande, NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen and many others have publicly stated their belief that Russian forces are behind the events in Ukraine,” writes Gen. Philip Breedlove, the Supreme Allied Commander of NATO. “What is happening in eastern Ukraine is a military operation that is well planned and organized and we assess that it is being carried out at the direction of Russia.”
