Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN) was the only major female candidate during the last presidential primaries in 2012, but in a new interview with syndicated columnist Cal Thomas she says many Americans still “aren’t ready” to have a woman as their president.

“I think there was a cachet about having an African-American president because of guilt,” Bachmann said of President Barack Obama’s nomination over Hillary Clinton in 2008 and eventual election over Sen. John McCain (R-AZ). She apparently did not elaborate on that idea, so Thomas added, “Presumably she means because of slavery and the lengthy denial of civil rights to blacks.”

“People don’t hold guilt for a woman,” Bachmann continued, adding “I don’t think there is a pent-up desire” for a woman president.
