Group aims to help citizens help themselves

A coalition of Second Amendment enthusiasts are empowering citizens of an Orlando neighborhood to better protect their homes by recommending free shotguns along with a firearms training course.
As WESH explains, the Armed Citizen Project works with gun manufacturers and dealers to get free or discounted shotguns that are then passed on to homeowners.
The group facilitates the transfer of shotguns to those interested in having the lawful means to defend themselves, their families and their homes against potentially violent intruders.
The project’s website states it is “dedicated to facilitating the arming of law abiding citizens, and analyzing the relationship between increased firearm availability and rates.”
We are choosing mid-high crime neighborhoods in cities across America, and offering defensive weapons to citizens that can pass a background check, and that will take our safety, legal, and tactical training. The data that we collect will be used in the completion of a policy study that will measure the deterrent effects of firearms on crime.
“This is perfectly legal,” says the group’s program director in Florida, Ron Ritter. “What we’re doing is offering a certified gun instruction class, but we’re not handing out the shotguns whatsoever. These guns have to be transferred through an FFL dealer.”
One neighborhood resident was brave enough to show her face on-camera, saying she doesn’t feel the need to have a firearm in her home.
“No, I would not need to have a shotgun,” Robin McLaughlin, a 25-year Sunshine Gardens resident, stated. “I mean, everyone has a right to bear arms, but that doesn’t mean we should all have a firearm for our own protection.”
Still, the response has been “overwhelming,” says Ritter of the project’s success. “People love it in Florida. Not only people that can sponsor themselves, but people that are looking for sponsorship.”
The Armed Citizen Project has already rolled out in cities like Tucson and Houston, and will do the same in 13 other cities, including crime-ridden areas like Chicago.
