Hip-hop mogul Russell Simmons, who today announced he was removing himself from his businesses after allegations that he raped screenwriter Jenny Lumet, was a strident male feminist who repeatedly virtue signaled about his opposition to the rape and abuse of women, while accusing Donald Trump of launching a “war against women”.
Lumet published an open letter today revealing how Simmons “sexually violated” her in 1991 “after accepting a ride home in Simmons’ car, only for his driver to take her to the music mogul’s apartment, despite her objections.”
Simmons “penetrated” Lumet in his apartment, an experience that left her feeling “dread and disorientation”.
The screenwriter said she felt the need to go public after Simmons denied separate allegations by model Keri Claussen Khalighi, who said Simmons sexually assaulted her during an incident in the same year.
Simmons claimed the encounter with Khalighi was consensual and that he had never “committed any acts of aggression or violence” in his life and would “never knowingly cause fear or harm to anyone.”
A brief search of Simmons’ Twitter history confirms that he was obsessed with virtue signaling about how much he cared about women’s rights.
In one darkly ironic tweet, Simmons remarked, “1 in 3 women on the planet will be raped or beaten in her life. Today I join #1billionrising to demand an end to violence.”

Back in January, Simmons expressed support for the ‘Women’s March’ and Linda Sarsour.
Shout out to the @NYjusticeleague for helping to organize the #WomensMarch! These three women are my sheroes! pic.twitter.com/HgIxnUL6nh

A vehement supporter of Hillary Clinton, alleged rapist Simmons accused Donald Trump of launching a war against women.
It is clear that @realDonaldTrump has declared war against women, African-Americans, Latinos, immigrants, Muslims, the working poor. Enough!

In a March 2012 tweet, Simmons lectured Geraldo Rivera for his treatment of women, commenting, “Like telling a women she got raped because she wore a skirt .. Dead ass wrong.”

Simmons also repeatedly marked International Women’s Day by virtue signaling his support for women.
To our mothers, sisters, and daughters, Happy International Women’s Day. We love you and appreciate you!

As far back as 2009, Simmons was blaming organized religion for abusing women.
Organized religions (all of them) have abused the animals the planet and each other especially women.

He also decried the sex trafficking of women.
The State Department estimates that 50,000 to 100,000 women and girls are trafficked each year in the United States.

In fact, Simmons’ Twitter history is so replete with proclamations about how much he cares for women, one might suspect that the hip hop mogul was compensating for something.
Simmons becomes the latest in a long line of celebrities and journalists who went through their entire careers virtue signaling about their passion for women’s rights, lecturing others as misogynists, while behind the scenes sexually harassing and assaulting women.
