Sen. Bob Corker (R-Tenn.), who came in last in a Drudge Report poll of Donald Trump’s potential VP picks, has taken himself out of consideration for Trump’s running mate, multiple outlets are reporting.
Corker’s withdrawal only fuels further speculation as to who Trump will pick out of a narrowing VP field.
“There are people far more suited for being a candidate for vice president and I think I’m far more suited for other types of things,” Corker told the Washington Post not long after telling Trump of his decision.
Corker, a self-described policy specialist who has a friendly relationship with the GOP nominee, also revealed he wasn’t comfortable stepping into the role of a “political attack dog,” which Trump is likely seeking in a running mate.
“It’s a highly political job, and that’s not who I am,” Corker told the Washington Post. “We had a very open conversation about that, and actually, we have been very candid about it from the very beginning of our meetings.”
“…It’s just not the right thing for me, and I don’t think it’s the right thing for them.”
It’s still possible Corker is on a short list for a cabinet position in a Trump administration.
