This is what Independence Day is all about. After I wrote a piece covering and tracking down the photo of a city sign banning fireworks, grills, and enacting mandatory bag searches, a local resident and Storyleak reader Tom Wysocki has gone and taped a copy of the Fourth Amendment to every one of the signs in order to remind visitors of their rights.
Here is a photo of the original sign:
The sign (now covered in Fourth Amendment copies thanks to Tom), which is actually located in Lakewood Ohio as proven by The Lakewood Observer website, is a result of Lakewood city Mayor Mike Summers’ decision to institute the bans in order to make citizens ‘safer’. Because who cares about your independence when celebrating Independence Day. Among the regulations, which includes a ban on fireworks like sparklers, is the enactment of random and mandatory bag seizures — which the Fourth Amendment clearly protects against.
In an attempt to remind individuals that you don’t have to allow police to search you for no reason this July, as this is not an isolated incident within Lakewood, let’s examine the text of the Fourth Amendment:
“The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.”
It seems our basic freedoms are on life support this July Fourth, and city regulations like these cannot stand uncorrected. One of the best ways is to bring awareness to the issue, as we have done by covering it here yesterday and having great sites like Infowars pick it up and push it into the headlines even further. The next step is activism, which Tom Wysocki did an excellent job of and deserves credit for.
