During a major policy speech on Friday, Obama promised some changes to the National Security Agency’s spying programs, but the changes fall short of the drastic cutbacks demanded by privacy groups.
“When Obama says he wants to reign in the NSA, he’s lying,” Stephen Lendman, author, activist and radio show host in Chicago, told Press TV on Saturday.
“Obama has a history of lying, he’s a serial liar, he literally has broken every major pledge he made,” Lendman said. “Can anybody believe that what he said yesterday can be believed, that he’ll actually follow through?”
“Obama defends the indefensible, he addressed sweeping NSA mass surveillance, he defended the worst of police state lawlessness, he believes privacy invasion intrusiveness should comfort us, he lied claiming it makes us safer,” he added.
Privacy rights advocates and tech firms have strongly criticized Obama’s proposed reforms to Washington’s spying activities.
Critics have dismissed Obama’s proposed overhaul, saying the proposals would have little effect and would only preserve the status quo.
Human Rights Watch has sent a letter to Obama, urging him to rein in the NSA’s spying activities and respect the privacy rights of people around the world.
Earlier this month, Amnesty International also sent an open letter to Obama and urged him to “put human rights at the center of US policy” when introducing reforms to NSA programs.
