The German intelligence agency, BND, said on Wednesday it had intercepted a phone call between Hezbollah and Iranian officials claiming that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad had mistakenly ordered the August 21 chemical attack in a Damascus suburb.
Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle, the head of the BND, told German lawmakers about the alleged intercepted phone call said to be between a high ranking member of the Lebanese Hezbollah organization and the Iranian embassy in Damascus.
Hezbollah and Iran support the Syrian government.
According to a Reuters report, the Hezbollah official said al-Assad gave an “order for the attack” and it “was a mistake and that he was losing his nerve.”
The Obama administration has not issued a response to the BND allegation.
Secretary of State John Kerry is currently making the administration’s case before Congress for intervention in Syria.
