It didn’t take long for the pushback following outrage over revelations that we live in an all-encompassing high-tech Stasi police state. Edward Snowden made his revelations known exactly two months ago today . The government has responded by concocting yet another vague and unsubstantiated terror threat it describes as the most serious since the September 11 attacks. The latest terror alert is a precursor of things to come.
From the Chicago Tribune on Tuesday:
Had our leaders been on their game in those years — particularly after the 1993 attempt to bring down the World Trade Center in New York City and the 1998 bombings of U.S. embassies in Africa — Osama bin Laden might have been dead for much more than these last 27 months. As the 9/11 Commission memorably put it in 2004: well before 19 hijackers boarded airliners, “The system was blinking red.”
Evidently the system again is blinking red. We expect it to blink red again, often.
So stay vigilant with your own personal alerts, never forgetting the imperative so visible in Manhattan and other vulnerable locales: If you see something, say something.
As for wishing away the war on terror — for trusting that one side of such a conflict can declare it over — don’t fool yourself.
The Cold War, remember, lasted 44 years. And in the 22 years since relentless American resolve brought that conflict to an end, neither side is letting down its guard.
In other words, the war on terror will continue for generations – as Dick Cheney foretold – and we are encouraged to embrace all of its monstrously authoritarian manifestations: from the Stasiesque see-something, say something stool pigeon program to an acceptance of the NSA’s electronic equivalence of underwear drawer snooping (and Glenn Greenwald promises there are more revelations to come).
The reaction of our “representatives” following the latest alert is demonstrative – they are almost completely and uniformly in accord as the military-intelligence complex and its traitorous subsidiaries destroy our liberties. We cannot look to them to protect the Constitution and stop the maddening march toward a police state of the sort never witnessed before.
Sen. Saxby Chambliss, R-Ga., the ranking member of the Senate Intelligence Committee said he was seeing chatter “reminiscent of what we saw pre-9/11” while House Homeland Security Committee Chairman Mike McCaul, R-Texas, told CBS’s “Face the Nation” that the terror plot seemed to be a “fairly large operation.”
