Bob Filner, the mayor of San Diego is being sued for sexual harassment by his former press spokesman who accused him of putting her in a “headlock” and asking her to “get naked.”

Mr Filner, 70, who previously served 20 years as a US congressman for California’s second largest city, was alleged to have gripped an arm around the neck of communications officer Irene McCormack Jackson, 57, suggesting they get married and telling her: “Wouldn’t it be great if we consummated the marriage?”

On another occasion in her office at City Hall the twice-divorced mayor was said to have asked her: “When are you going to get naked? Come on and give me a kiss.” He was also alleged to have asked her to work with no underwear on.

The allegations were detailed in an 11-page court complaint. Ms McCormack Jackson, a former journalist who stopped working for the mayor in June, said her former boss was “not fit to be the mayor of our great city.”
