When a cop pulls up to your campsite, the last thing you’d expect him to do is bust out a guitar and start jamming “Smoke on the Water.”
But that’s exactly what Officer Doug Sokoloski did.
Sokoloski, a constable for the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, arrived at a noisy campsite at Crowsnest Pass Saturday, near the Alberta/British Columbia border, much to the dismay of weekend campers.
Shawn Salberg, one of the campers, told CTV, “When he pulled up everyone was sort of like, ‘Oh, no. We’re probably in trouble for something, right?”
The campers had brought their musical instruments along for a campground jam session and thought the officer was going to scorn them for being too loud, but what he did next shocked the campers so that they decided to film it and put it on Youtube.
First the officer riffs on Deep Purple’s “Smoke on the Water.”
Next, he lets his wild side out when he switches over to drums.
The video of the “coolest cop ever” has gone viral. Having only been posted four days ago, it’s already generated 357,897 views at the time of this posting.
“Just always have a camera handy, you know? You never know when something cool is gonna happen,” Salberg told Global Lethbridge.
I don’t have to tell you that it’s positively a breath of fresh air to read a story about an officer just being a normal human being for once.
Far too often we are subjected to horror stories of ego maniacal ape bully cops, sexually deviant “public servants,” and all around “douchebags,” for lack of a better term, that more frequently seem to dominate police stations and headlines around the world.
Day after day we are forced to document and report stories of extreme police corruption that involve sexual molestation, extortion, brutality, lying, invasions of privacy, violations of constitutional rights, and even murder.
But throughout the whole of the bad news we hold out hope for our boys in blue; hopes that they’re not all the roid-raged, profit-driven megalomaniacs these articles I’ve pointed to make them out to be.
If more cops started picking up guitars and drumsticks, instead of batons and tasers, I think we might just have a chance.
