The attack by gunmen armed with a Kalashnikov and flash grenades took place at lunchtime on Place Saint-Lambert in Liege, home to the town’s courthouse and a busy Christmas market.
One of the assailants was killed while another fled inside the courthouse, where members of a crack police squad were taking up position, Belga news agency quoted police as saying.
Local newspapers reported the three assailants lobbed grenades into a crowd at the bus shelter and opened fire with guns.
The reports said witnesses reported four explosions and gun fire.
An unidentified man who was wounded in the attack told Belgium’s VRT television network that “someone threw grenades and fired shots”.
