A spy car intended to curb dangerous parking outside schools has instead targeted inner-city drivers, netting more than $700,000 in fines in a year – nearly twice its original target.
Since it was introduced in August last year, Wellington City Council’s spy car has issued 13,428 parking tickets, valued at $706,450, council figures show.

When the car was introduced, the council said one of its main functions was to target unsafe parking outside schools. However, more than half the tickets it has issued have have been in four inner-city streets.
The Terrace had the most, with 2634 tickets. The most common offence, with 5269 infringements, was for parking on broken yellow lines.
