The Alabama House and Senate have passed slightly different versions of the state education budget that agree on two key points: Cutting nearly 1,200 teaching jobs and keeping students in school for the traditional 180 days.
The Senate approved the $5.6 billion budget 33-0 Tuesday evening. It now goes back to the House, which passed its version earlier.

Republican House Speaker Mike Hubbard said he expects the House to send the budget to a conference committee of six legislators to work out the slight differences, which total only $687,000.
