President Trump surprised many by signing the tax cut bill early, with Trump saying he did so to keep his promise and to defy mainstream media doubters.
Trump indicated that he chose to enact the bill early as a response to criticism on news outlets that he was breaking a promise to have the legislation signed before Christmas.
“I was going to wait for a formal signing some time in early January, but then I watched the news this morning and they were all saying, ‘Will he keep his promise, will he sign it by Christmas?'” Trump said.
“And I called downstairs and said get it ready, we have to sign it now.”
Just before he signed the bill, Trump said that a more elaborate formal ceremony was initially planned to take place in January, but that was abandoned so he could keep his promise.
“I didn’t want you folks to say I wasn’t keeping my promise, I’m keeping my promise, I’m signing it before Christmas.”
“I said that the bill would be on my desk before Christmas and you are holding me literally to that so we did a rush job,” added Trump.
The tax cut is already proving popular with both employers and employees, with numerous large companies announcing wage rises and snap bonuses for workers over the last 24 hours.
