President-elect Donald Trump announced that Dr. David Shulkin will run the Department of Veterans Affairs.
Shulkin, the VA’s current undersecretary for health, was previously the chief executive for several private hospital systems, including the Morristown Medical Center in New Jersey.
Trump transition officials indicated that the administration plans to reform the VA by giving private health care providers, who often treat patients more quickly than the VA, a greater role in treating America’s veterans.
Veterans may even have a choice to opt into private care instead of the VA under current Trump proposals.
Trump has now filled 20 of his 21 Cabinet posts — with the position of secretary of agriculture still empty.
