Human smugglers have new tricks up their sleeves: knock-off Border Patrol vehicles.
Customs and Border Protection agents in the Laredo Sector caught a human smuggler transporting 12 illegal aliens in a Chevy Tahoe with decals closely similar to their own, according to a photo uploaded to Facebook by KRGV reporter Leslie Aguilar.
The audacious effort underscores how smugglers are going to great lengths to take financial advantage of the new surge of illegal immigrants bypassing the US-Mexico border.
This year’s influx has led immigration officials to enact “emergency measures” and open new shelters for unaccompanied minors and families.
“Out of an abundance of caution, the Office of Refugee Resettlement at the Department of Health and Human Services has begun a process to expand its temporary capacity to house unaccompanied children,” the department said Monday. “The entire administration has been closely monitoring these current trends and coordinating across the whole of government to ensure an effective response to any changes in migration flows.”
