A school in Hays County, Texas was sent into a state of panic Wednesday when a student asked for some gum. Because the word “gum” sounds like the word “gun”, well… PANIC.

KCEN News reports that the student at Lehman High School asked a classmate for some gum, but a student who overheard thought he was asking for a gun.

Cue frothing insanity, as a search for a weapon ensued. Of course, no gun was found.

Hays County school district spokesman Tim Savoy has insisted that school did not go into “lock down,” but did admit that administrators held students in their extended class periods “to investigate the concern with little to no disruption to their schedule.”

The Hays Free Press reports that Lehman Principal Michelle Chae even wrote a letter to parents detailing the incident.

The letter states:

Dear Lobo Parents,

This morning we received a report from a student that there was allegedly a weapon on campus. After investigating the concern, it was determined that a student thought he heard the word “gun,” but in fact it was another student asking for some “gum.”

The safety of our students is always foremost on our list of priorities, so we take these concerns seriously. We continue to encourage students to report anything they see or hear that causes them concern. Fortunately, in this case, it was a misunderstanding and there was no threat to our school or need to conduct a lockdown.

Because we are conducting the PSAT, we were able to hold students in their extended class periods to investigate the concern with little to no disruption to their schedule.

The incident comes in the wake of yet another shooting at a college in Oregon, where a gunman was afforded the time to line up students and execute them based on questions regarding their religion.

The Umpqua Community College was operating a “no gun zone” policy, despite Oregon law allowing for concealed carry.

Reportedly, an armed Air Force veteran with a concealed carry license was prepared to violate the ‘gun free zone’ rule and attempt to apprehend the shooter, but he was stopped from doing so by college staff.

A former security guard who worked at the college also exclusively revealed to Infowars that the college voted against hiring armed security guards just last year and that inadequate lockdown procedures ensured the campus was a “deathtrap” for potential victims in an active shooter situation.

The pro-Constitutional group Oath Keepers announced recently that it plans to prevent further school shootings by forming college and high school chapters to train students to “fight back” in such situations, given that many schools refuse to hire armed security.
