During his historic speech before the U.S. Congress, Pope Francis took America to task for protecting its borders and called for a borderless world where migrants wander freely.

“Our world is facing a refugee crisis of a magnitude not seen since the second World War,” USA Today quotes the pontiff declaring during his speech.

Francis included “thousands of persons (who) are led to travel north in search of a better life,” a direct reference to illegal immigrants entering the United States.

“We must not be taken aback by their numbers, but rather view them as persons, seeing their faces and listening to their stories, trying to respond as best we can to their situation.”

“To respond in a way which is always humane, just and fraternal. We need to avoid a common temptation nowadays: to discard whatever proves troublesome.”

Francis and the Vatican, however, should take their own advice to heart.

The Vatican City State, the smallest internationally recognized independent state in the world, is a walled enclave within the city of Rome.

Before the Pope preaches to the American people about their border and the possibility of a wall to keep out illegal immigrants, he should tear down his own wall.
