Politico reports that it has information from “a close associate” of Donald Trump, indicating that the GOP candidate intends to sign a loyalty pledge “that would bind him to endorse the Republican nominee, and would preclude a third-party run.”
The Republican National Committee made it clear Wednesday that they want every candidate running for nomination to sign a pledge not to break off run as a third Party candidate “under any circumstances”.
The pledge also binds candidates to promise to “endorse the 2016 Republican presidential nominee regardless of who it is.”
The GOP is worried that third party campaigns will jeapordise the party’s chances against the eventual Democratic presidential candidate.
As the current most popular candidate, and considering Trump’s anti-establishment gimmick, the GOP is clearly concerned he may break off from the pack.
Trump has threatened to do so repeatedly, and even refused to rule out the possibility during the Fox News debate.
At an event Saturday in Nashville, Trump declared that he will soon make a decision about a third party run, saying only that “I think a lot of people are going to be very happy.”
“Should he fail to claim the Republican presidential nomination. Such a decision would make it all but impossible for the Republican Party to win the White House in 2016.” reports Politico.
The report also notes that Trump is scheduled to meet with RNC Chairman Reince Priebus, presumably regarding the pledge.
Appearing on ‘CBS This Morning’, fellow GOP candidate Rand Paul declared that he is going to sign the pledge, noting that if Trump does not it could directly lead to Hillary Clinton becoming President.
“What I don’t like about Donald Trump is his using the Republican party and then perhaps going out at the very end after he doesn’t win the nomination and then trying to destroy the Republican party,” Paul said.
“Ross Perot, you know, ended up giving us the first Clinton and I think that if Trump does this again, he could give us another Clinton.”
“We have said in the past that I am not going to run as a third party candidate,” Paul added. “And I think that is a reasonable pledge to take.”
Paul also noted, however, that he thinks “Third parties do provide pressure on the two parties to do better, actually.”
