It seems that the Democrats who shot down legislation to divert taxpayer funds away from planned Parenthood and to non-abortion women’s health clinics, never even watched any of the videos of PP officials haggling over prices to harvest baby organs and tissue.

The legislation, authored by Sen. Joni Ernst, fell short by just seven votes of the 60 needed for the bill to progress.

It turns out, however, that several Democrats have not even bothered to watch the videos released by The Center for Medical Progress that show Planned Parenthood officials haggling prices for aborted baby body parts, while sipping wine and laughing and joking about buying a Lamborghini with the profits.

The Weekly Standard asked several Democrats if they had watched the footage, and the response from most was to admit they hadn’t or to try to avoid the question.

“I have not seen them,” Senator Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire told me after the vote.

“I’m sorry, what’s your name?” asked Senator Brian Schatz of Hawaii in response to a simple yes-or-no question. “Can you call my comms director?”

“I have not seen them, no,” Senator Bob Casey of Pennsylvania told me last week.

As New York senator Chuck Schumer stepped into a senators-only elevator, I asked him the same yes-or-no question. “Shut the door,” Schumer told an aide.

Only one Democratic senator, Claire McCaskill of Missouri, told me that she had seen any of the videos. McCaskill agreed that the videos were disturbing, but she added that “that’s not the point. The point is to prevent abortions by making sure that women can get birth control.”

Before yesterday’s vote, Rep. Alan Grayson also bizarrely called the video[s] “doctored”.

Several people pointed out that the videos are not doctored. The shorter versions are edited, but the full 2-3 hour versions are readily available online.

It’s a pathetic talking point that has even been repeated by White House press secretary Josh Earnest, who actually called the videos fraudulent.

His evidence? Planned Parenthood told him. He didn’t actually watch the videos, but “suspects someone (in the White House) has”.

Of course, we are not surprised by any of this. Senators and Representatives don’t even bother reading legislation they vote on any more. Most simply blindly follow party lines, or vote with whoever throws the most cash at them.
