For instance, in response to the globalization – the BBC calls it privatization – of coal mines and a horrific disaster that claimed the lives 282 people in Soma, trade unions held a protest over deplorable working conditions.
During a visit by Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, scuffles broke out and an aide, Yusuf Yerkel, was photographed kicking a protester as he was held down by police.
It’s an emblematic photo showing the real face of the state, a rarity that does not come along very often as minions of the ruling elite are normally reserved and private in condoning the state’s monopoly of violence.
