Border Patrol agents want federal lawmakers to overhaul their complex pay system, said Agent Shawn Moran, vice president with the National Border Patrol Council — and nix the controversy surrounding “administratively uncontrollable overtime.”
Moran and J. David Cox Sr., who heads the American Federation of Government Employees, toured the McAllen Border Patrol Station on Monday, starting a weeklong campaign advocating pay reform. Both organizations support simplifying how U.S. Customs and Border Protection pays agents for working overtime.
Under the current system, federal regulations allow agents to work administratively uncontrollable overtime — commonly called AUO by agents — without approval from management. Many agents work 10 additional hours every week, which boosts their annual pay by roughly 25 percent.
