Those who repeatedly put on and then lose weight again may find themselves at greater risk of heart disease in later life, the study found.

Scientists found in particular that usually normal weight menopausal women who have yo-yo diets are at three and a half times higher risk for sudden cardiac death than women whose weight remained stable.

They also had a 66 per cent increased risk of coronary heart disease deaths.
