As long as the weather cooperates, star gazers will soon get a double dose of celestial treats, with the vivid Geminid meteor shower getting more active this week and another big “supermoon” on the way next week.
The timing for the annual Geminid meteor shower is not ideal, because its peak — the night of Dec. 13 into the morning of Dec. 14 — happens to coincide with the bright full moon. But astronomy experts from earthsky.org say the shower should still provide enough shooting stars to make it worth watching.
“It’s one of the best and most reliable (meteor showers of the year) because it’s in the early evening and it’s bright,” said Jim Roselli, president of the New Jersey Astronomical Association.
