Two Taliban spokesmen have said their mobile phones, emails and a website have been hacked into and messages issued falsely reporting the death of the movement’s supreme leader, Mullah Mohammad Omar.
The one-eyed, reclusive leader, is one of the most wanted men in the world. He is believed to be living in Pakistan, probably in the city of Quetta, but Pakistan and the Taliban movement both say he is in Afghanistan.
“This is the work of American intelligence, and we will take revenge on the telephone network providers,” a Taliban spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid, said when contacted by Reuters to confirm the veracity of a text message. The messages, which came from phone numbers used in the past by Mujahid and another spokesman, Mohammad Qari Yousuf, said “Spiritual leader Mullah Mohammad Omar Mujahid has died” and “May Allah bless his soul”.
