Some little-known facts about the father of the American civil rights movement and non-violence “guru” — Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. — and his history with guns:
• MLK kept firearms in his house for self-protection.
• MLK’s house was once described as “an arsenal.”
• MLK applied for a concealed-carry permit after his house was bombed. (He was rejected.)
• MLK surrounded himself and his family with armed bodyguards.
Many in the civil-rights movement continued to carry guns after MLK gave them up. Ironically, the assassinations of MLK and US Senator Robert Kennedy helped open the “policy window” needed to pass the Gun Control Act of 1968.
One has to wonder about these things.
Murder has always been illegal and yet murder still happens.
People (like MLK) willfully disarm themselves in the name of peace and non-violence and yet peaceful/non-violent people continue to be murdered in cold blood.
Gun restrictions keep getting tighter and tighter and yet murders continue to be committed with guns (and other weapons), both legal and illegal.
