If Wikileaks’ Julian Assange is extradited to the United States, he can expect to be treated worse than a terrorist. Some have suggested that he could be executed.
According to accused Assange accomplice Bradley Manning’s lawyer, David Coombs, his client and other soldiers accused of “aiding the enemy” – in the Wikileaks case, the enemy is the American people – are treated worse than al-Qaeda terrorists.
“It defies all logic to think that a terrorist would fare better in an American court for aiding the enemy than a US soldier would,” Coombs writes in a motion has lodged with the court as part of the lead up to a full court martial.
Manning faces 22 counts and the “aiding the enemy” is the most serious. It is considered treason and technically carries the death penalty, although the prosecution has stated they will not ask for Manning’s execution.
The bass playing former presidential candidate, Mike Huckabee, and others, however, have called for Manning’s execution.
Manning, Wikileaks and Assange released their generation’s version of the Pentagon Papers when the whistleblower website posted “hundreds of thousands of US state secrets, including embassy cables from around the world and war logs from Iraq and Afghanistan, that caused a worldwide sensation when they were published,” according to The Guardian.
