In the Worldwide Threat Assessment of the U.S. Intelligence Community for 2017 that Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats delivered to the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence today, the IC predicted there will probably be terrorist attacks in the United States conducted by “U.S.-based homegrown violent extremists” whom it called “the most frequent and unpredictable Sunni violent extremist threat to the United States.”
The threat assessment also said “a small number of foreign-based Sunni violent extremist groups will also pose a threat to the US homeland.”
“US-based homegrown violent extremists (HVEs) will remain the most frequent and unpredictable Sunni violent extremist threat to the US homeland,” the threat assessment said in a section entitled “Terrorist Threat to the United States.”
