As recently as last year, al-Qaeda considered targeting oil tankers and drilling platforms at sea in an attempt to disrupt the global economy and punish Western nations, according to an advisory issued by the Department of Homeland Security and the FBI, USA TODAY’s Kevin Johnson reports.

The advisory issued to federal, state and local authorities is based on information gathered in the Pakistani raid ending in the death of al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden.

DHS spokesman Matt Chandler says the information did not represent a “specific or imminent” attack and that there is no plan to issue a national threat alert.
