WASHINGTON—The U.S. has “a window of opportunity” to defeat al Qaeda’s central leadership in Pakistan in the wake of the raid that killed Osama bin Laden, the CIA’s new director David Petraeus said Tuesday.

Al Qaeda and its affiliates, however, continue to pose a serious threat to U.S. security, Mr. Petraeus said in his first public remarks since taking over the Central Intelligence Agency last week. “We need to recognize the need to be in this for the long haul,” he said. “Much work remains to be done.”

Mr. Petraeus referred in his testimony to the terrorist threat timed to coincide with last weekend’s 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks, but only as an example of how agencies are working more closely together than before. He said the terror threat, while credible, remains unconfirmed.
