Saudi Arabia was ‘carefully silent’ after the P5+1 reached a deal with Iran on curbing its nuclear programme in exchange for sanctions relief. It disagrees with the US over how to respond to the war in Syria and to Egypt’s political crisis, and recently declined its non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council.
Prince Bandar Bin Sultan al-Saud, the current head of Saudi intelligence, met recently with European diplomats in Riyadh to notify them of a ‘major shift’ in US–Saudi relations, and former Saudi intelligence chief Prince Turki suggested that the Gulf States would become more independent.
