When Americans talk about the Iraq war these days, they usually miss the mark.
The scholar and the Iraq veteran said the same thing Wednesday, independently of each other and six hours apart. They lamented that much of the public discourse centers on winning or losing, and on whether the surge is working or not, and on how competently or ineptly the occupation is being managed.
This is the same sort of discussion that took place during the Vietnam War, they told the audience at St. Michael’s College on Wednesday, and the fact that it’s taking place again suggests that Americans are still missing the point, because the fundamental focus should be elsewhere: on the legality and morality of the war to begin with.
