Despite calls for the inclusion of Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccine (PCV) the immunization programme, the Federal Government said funding challenges has made it impossible to do so.

The head of immunization division, National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), Dr Mahmud Mustapha, who spoke to Daily Trust during the National Pneumococcal Summit, explained that the vaccine can only be factored in 2013 because funds for the vaccine needs to be sought for. He said the vaccines were expensive.

According to him, the country has to take into consideration sustainability and also the huge population of Nigeria to be covered adding that “one doesn’t just jump into such a venture without careful and adequate planning.”
