Red wine lovers rejoice–drinking this nectar of the gods may helps boost your fertility if you are trying to conceive with polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS).

Women with PCOS notoriously have a difficult time conceiving due to the hormone imbalances that the condition causes.

However, scientists have recently discovered that the resveratrol, which is naturally found in grapes, can actually lower the levels of testosterone and dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEAS) in women with PCOS, making it a little bit easier for them to get pregnant.

These results come from a recent study at the University of Poznan in Poland, in which 30 women with PCOS took a resveratrol pill each day for a total of three months, while others in the group took a placebo pill.

After the three months, the women were tested for levels of testosterone and dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEAS), and the results were quite shocking.

It was found that women who took the reservatrol pill had a 23.1% decline in testosterone in their body, compared to the placebo group who actually had a 3% increase of the hormone.

The levels of  dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEAS) were even more dramatic, as those who took resveratrol noted a 22.2% decrease, while those who took the placebo experienced an increase of the hormone by over 10%.

Resveratrol was also found to help lower insulin levels amongst the women who took it.

Lead author of the study, Professor Antoni Duleba, stated:

“The findings suggest resveratrol can improve the body’s ability to use insulin and potentially lower the risk of developing diabetes.”

Those involved in the study say that these findings can help lower the risk of metabolic issues that result in PCOS, which often make many women with the disorder gain weight without much effort.

PCOS currently affects one in 10 women, most of whom are of childbearing age. It typically runs in families, though the cause of the syndrome is unknown at present.

While researchers don’t recommend that those who are trying to conceive drink alcohol, drinking a glass a day of red wine may help improve your chances of getting pregnant in the future if you have PCOS.
