Eight people across three states have become sickened with salmonella Oranienburg after consuming eggs from the Missouri-based Good Earth Egg Company.
Those who have contracted the illness are based in Kansas, Missouri and Illinois. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), two of the eight people have been hospitalized for their illness. Thus far, no deaths have been reported in conjunction with the outbreak.
It is suspected that those who have contracted salmonella consumed the eggs between April 23, 2016 and August 24, 2016. Those who have been sickened range in age from toddlers to older adults (the oldest victim is age 85). Most of those sickened are females.
Those who have been infected with salmonella reportedly ate the eggs both at home and at local restaurants where the eggs were served.
Good Earth Egg Company, which is headquartered in Bonne Terre, Missouri, faced a similar issue in 2015. During that year, 52 people were stricken with a very similar strain of salmonella and they company was forced to recall all of their eggs on January 9, 2016.
The CDC is urging restaurants not to serve Good Earth Egg Company eggs and for consumers not to purchase them. The company sells their eggs under several different names, so if you are unsure if you have Good Earth Egg Company eggs, it is advised that you contact your local grocer and inquire into the origin of the eggs.
If you find you have had Good Earth Eggs in your home, it is advised that you clean all surfaces that may have touched them. It is also advised that you thoroughly clean any utensils that may have come in contact with the eggs.
Currently, the investigation into the outbreak is ongoing, which may lead to further action.
Symptoms of salmonella include abdominal cramps, fever and diarrhea. Most people will recover from the illness within a few days without medical intervention. However, the very young, elderly, and those with underlying medical conditions are at a greater risk of developing complications.
